Championship Saturday

CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY

Well we are finally here at the end of the season.  Here are the matchups for the final day

B Runner-up - Devils vs Kings

A Runner-up - Wolves vs Bulls

B Final - Dawgs vs Mustangs

A Final - Hawks vs Cowboys

The Banquet will start following the A Final in the room above the rink.  The banquet is always a fantastic event to end the season and a good time is had by all.  We would like to ensure that all attending make appropriate arrangements to get home.  Generally your best bet is to arrange transportation - either have someone pick you up or take a cab.  Getting everyone home safely is of utmost importance.  Please be responsible.  Looking forward to a fun day of hockey and an even more fun evening to celebrate a long and awesome season.

Tickets are now available for the end of year banquet that takes place on Championship Saturday (April 22nd).  Below are some frequently asked questions about the banquet.

Tightest Standings in Years

For the first time in the modern era we have a solid dog fight (not a Dawg fight Tom) going into the stretch run before the playoffs.  Our statisticians checked the history books and have not found any record of such close standings.  You need to go way back to the Doug Comfort days prior to the computer or ball point pen to find out if this has ever happened in the Oaks before.

Looking at the standings only 11 points separates first from last and four teams have identical .500 records.  This should lead to an exciting finish to the regular season.  The good news is that all teams make the playoffs this season so there is no need to panic.

Should be a fun finish to the regular season.  Hopefully we have some exciting highlights to cap it off.  Here are the top things the experts are predicting for the second half:

1)  A point surge from all of the Wilton's

2)  The Kane family will appear on a Jerry Springer comeback special entitled "Ruling the Roost, how Harrison took the head seat at the  Kane family dinner table"

3)  Coukos will wear women's figure skates and tights, but still score 6 goals a game

4)  Jeff Lyall will go penalty free

5)  The Cowboys team will miss at least one game and will be found at the Twisted Oak instead

6)  Dan Montanari will change his post-game skate to include pulling the Zamboni, which will somehow decrease flood times

7)  Drew Boorn will take some time away to feature in a action adventure film entitled "The Boorn Preschool Teacher"

9)  The McCrudens will get their own feature sandwich at McDonalds.  It will feature 4 pounds of bacon, cheese wiz, cabbage, beef jerky and their own "special sauce"

10) The league will force Mack to play with a rubber hose for a stick

JAGGER SIZZLES IN OVERTIME WITH BRILLIANT WINNER

JAGGER SCORES DAZZLER IN O/T

Thursday night's game between the powerhouse Bulls and the young upstart Devils is being called by many reporters as an all-time great.  This is thanks largely to the incredible overtime performance of Jagger who hammered home a beauty one-timer to end it in the dwindling seconds of the extra frame.

The play had gone back and forth throughout the game with each team taking and surrendering momentum countless times.  It was a scrappy, emotionally charged, penalty filled game that had a packed house out of their seats.  Attendance at Bond Head was estimated at 7, which is well above league averages and it was noticeable as the game reached dizzying heights at the end of the third when the Bulls scored two quick goals to tie things up.  Both teams were committed to the win and were fighting to the final buzzer.  Early in the extra frame Bulls stud Charron took a penalty to give the Devils the man advantage which would lead the eventual game winner

Jagger and "partner" Point were enjoying a tremendous game together which began early on.  Crisp passing, sound defensive zone positioning, and pinpoint accurate shots from the blue line which are the hallmark of both of their games shone through brilliantly during the entire contest.  The final goal saw Jagger, known for his deft scoring touch and finish around the net, take an awkward cross-ice pass from recently acquired prospect McCartney and roofed it in jaw dropping fashion to end the game.  Hang time on the puck was estimated at 43 seconds allowing members of the media to capture several amazing photos of the puck beating Morello.  The backspin on the puck was so great it crossed back over the line causing officials to have to review the play before declaring the goal was good.  The blistering one-timer and honey of a goal is just the latest notch in the belt of the prolific defenseman's career which has featured countless highlight reel goals and spectacular moments.

Following the game, Twitter was ablaze with activity.

Missed the game, but caught the replay of the goal.  If he didn’t use a pool skimmer for a stick he would have missed it.  Looked like an R.A. Dickey pitch.  Jays should hire Jagger to lay down bunts.

Equalization this Weekend

EQUALIZATION THIS WEEKEND

There is always a lot of talk in the first few months of the season about team equalization.  If you are new to the league, equalization is done after two rounds through the schedule (each team played each other twice).  The goal of the league is to have 8 competitive teams every season and with new players each year and different team compositions it is difficult to predict how teams will stack up until they hit the ice.  In order to do this it often requires that stronger teams trade players with weaker team in order to balance the league.  While team records are a factor in this determination, player composition and on-ice performance are also looked at.  If there are any players moved during equalization they will be contacted by their respective team reps prior to Monday's games.

Blue Jays Games Drawing Attention

BLUE JAYS GAMES DRAWING INTEREST AT THE RINK

The Blue Jays game drew a lot of interest before, after, and even during the games on Monday evening as players huddled around the TV at the rink to see how the game was going.  Our local statistician reported  that scrums in the corner near the T.V. and icing calls were up a dramatic 400% Monday night.  Big celebrations happened on the ice following a Tulowitzki three run homer.  Did anyone catch the score of the game on the ice?

Welcome to the 2014-2015 ORMRHL season!
Hello all,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 Oaks season. On this website, you can find:

- Schedule
- Standings
- Stats
- News
- A little bit of banter

Feel free to participate as much as you'd like! If you have any stat corrections, either tell your team rep or send me a message on the site. Also, feel free to post anything pertaining to the league (let's keep it semi-clean, boys). The more participation the better. Again, if you have any suggestions for the site, feel free to contact me - or just come up to me if you see me around the rink (or at the bar...most likely the bar...)

Thanks and good luck this year,

PLAYOFF UPDATE - GAME #5...Standings are tighter than (insert dirty innuendo here)

This is damn close, boys. Results include 3 shutouts for the Hawks (1-0 vs. the Dawgs), Devils (5-0 vs. the Mustangs) and Bulls (2-0 vs. the Cowboys). The Wolves also locked it down against the Kings winning 3-1. 4.5 points separate 7 teams with 2 games to play. On the docket for Wednesday, Hawks-Mustangs renew their fierce rivalry. Wolves-Cowboys, Bulls-Kings & Dawgs-Devils round out the schedule. See you all at the rink for Wednesday night playoff hockey!

PLAYOFF STANDINGS AFTER 4 GAMES
Here are the standings. Analysis to come tomorrow after tonight's round. Some HUGE tilts on tap for this evening. Can the Mustangs extend their lead? Can the Cowboys continue to hang with the big boys? Can the Hawks keep momentum going and shoot up the standings? Plenty of intriguing storylines will unfold tonight.

PLAYOFF UPDATE - GAME #2 - This is gonna be close, folks. Some right the ship, some don't...
Second half of a back to back. Could be a tough test for some. But this is playoff hockey, boys. It's a war of attrition:

TEAM - SCORE (PLAYOFF POINTS)

DEVILS - 3 (4) vs. KINGS - 2 (1)

The Devils played the late game the night before. This was a character win by Hell's favorite team. A little unfortunate for the Kings only getting 1 point out of a close game. Casey Denouden potted 2 g-notes for the Devs.

MUSTANGS - 3 (5) vs. WOLVES - 0 (0)

Talk about a redemption game! The Mustangs showed their mettle by smothering the Wolves and taking all 5 points. Balanced scoring with goals from Malloy, Lyall and Corallo (all in different periods, too). The Wolves weren't too happy with their effort with rookie d-man Spencer McCartney saying "This was a tough one. We're not too happy. We know we can play better and I guarantee to all the Wolf Pack (Wolves fans) that we will come out like a bat out of hell next game against the Hawks".

DAWGS - 3 (4) vs. BULLS - 2 (1)

A clash of the playoff titans after one game and this was a close one. All the goals came in the second half of the game with a 3rd period Jason Gendron tally being the game winner. Steve Vine continued his hot play in the win.

COWBOYS - 5 (4.5) vs. HAWKS - 2 (0.5)

The depleted Hawks are in a bit of a hole. But, doesn't that write a perfect script for a redemption story? The Cowboys played one of their most complete games of the year, capitalizing on their chances and playing solid team defence. Niesser had a very strong game, making due on the claim that he's a "playoff performer". D-man Kurtis Wilton was an offensive powerhouse, popping 2 goals for the Hawks. Jeff Connor had a hat trick for the Boys.

STANDINGS

DAWGS - 8
COWBOYS - 7
MUSTANGS - 6
BULLS - 5
DEVILS - 5
WOLVES - 4
KINGS - 3.5
HAWKS - 1.5

PLAYOFF UPDATE - GAME #1 - Hawks, Mustangs scuffle...Bulls, Dawgs off and running.
BOYS,

My apologies, I am having trouble updating the standings and whatnot for the playoffs, so I will update everything right here in the news until I can figure it out. First, a quick rundown of the action that went down on the latest gruelling gauntlet that was a playoff back-to-back:

Team - Score (Playoff Points)

DAWGS - 2 (4) vs. MUSTANGS - 0 (1)

Playoffs started off with a defensive grind with the Dawgs coming out with the quintessential playoff game winning 2-0. Veteran goalie Steve Vine kept them in there, aided by goals from Scott Johnson and Greg Scott. Mustangs even had a full team too. Lots of time left though.

BULLS - 2 (4) vs. HAWKS - 0 (1)

Another top team goes down. After breezing through the season, the Hawks fell victim to the Bulls' quick strike offence. Even with star Darryl Dafoe intruding the Cowboys room because he was late (sketchy), Lenny Smith got the shutout behind goals from stars Mack Charron and Mike Hodgins. The Hawks were a depleted group, missing Coukos, Boorn and Burton among others. 2 games in and the power structure of the Oaks has been totally flipped. That's playoff hockey for you, folks.

KINGS - 4 (2.5) vs. COWBOYS - 4 (2.5)

A fast-paced, hard-fought game. Just to show how fast momentum can swing, the Cowboys seemed to be in control until Rob Iudciani ripped 2 clap bombs from outside the blue line past Kenny Niesser. Two goals that he'd admittedly like back but an otherwise cool and collected performance by the Cowboys tender.

WOLVES - 4 (4) vs. DEVILS - 1 (1)

This game was fantastic. Everyone was flying out there and some fantastic goaltending from Ritza (he's like an 80's goalie!) and Doggart. The Wolves pulled Ritza with 50 seconds to go and ended up pulling another 0.5 point back with a clutch goal by Denouden. Would both teams be ready for the quick turnaround Thursday?

STANDINGS AFTER GAME 1

BULLS - 4
DAWGS - 4
WOLVES - 4
KINGS - 2.5
COWBOYS - 2.5
HAWKS - 1
MUSTANGS -1
DEVILS - 1

#OaksHockey Monday Stat Pack
As per @RealOaksHockey Twitter Feed, here is your Monday Stat Pack:

MUSTANGS vs. HAWKS: An undeniable force meets an immovable object. Hawks are 12-1-2 in games played to a total of OVER 7.5 goals while the Mustangs are 6-1 in games played to a total of UNDER 7.5 goals. Mustangs can leapfrog the Hawks for 1st place with a W.
COWBOYS vs. WOLVES: Cowboys continue their roller coaster season, they are 8-5-0 after a 1-10-0 start. Wolves have played the Cowboys to 11-10 and have split their 2 head to head games, yet they are 0-5-0 in games with a total of OVER 9.5 goals this year. The key to their success is locking down defensively.
KINGS vs. BULLS: Bulls just halted a 5 game losing streak with an exciting comeback OT win vs. the Cowboys on Thursday. Kings have been stingy at both ends of the rink, playing to 10-5 over last 5. The Bulls are 1-5-0 when they have scored 2 goals or less in a game. Scoring may be at a premium against the Kings, but the Bulls need to fill the net to get a sustained run going.
DAWGS vs. DEVILS: Dawgs are the hottest team in the league going 5-0-1 in their last 6 with 20 goals for and only 8 against. The Devils are 0-2 vs. Dawgs head-to-head this year, both being 1 goal games. Expect this to be a close, low-scoring game.
Remember, follow @RealOaksHockey on Twitter for all the latest updates regarding the Oak Ridges Men's Recreational Hockey League.

Cheers!

There's a new sheriff in town - #CowboysNation
Another game, another win. This has become the routine for the Cowboys, reeling off 7 wins in their last 10 games. But there is one change in #CowboysNation though, as they now have the LEADING SCORER in the league. Their fearless captain (who did not in any way shape or form commission the writing of this article) Jeff "El Jefe" Connor has been filling the old onion bag at a near-legendary clip after a relatively slow start to the campaign. About his resurgence in the goal scoring charts, Jeff told Oaks Daily, "You know, its been good. I've been being a lot more selfish in the last 10 games than earlier in the year and that's helped me pad my stats. Obviously I want us to win, but winning the scoring title is another goal of mine." Led by "El Jefe" ("The Boss" for those who are not well read in the Spanish language) the Cowboys are looking to bank on their mix of youth and experience to keep moving up the table. After an abysmal 1-10 start to the year, #CowboysNation is expecting nothing less than a championship from this explosive group.

What Playing In This League Is All About!
Anyone who has been in the league for more than a couple of weeks will recognize Davey in the lobby watching games and cheering the guys on. Anyone who has been in the league for many years knows that while Davey does not play on a team, he is as much a part of our league as anybody.

Monday night Davey was presented an official ORMRHL jacket complete with his name embroidered on it. He was also invited to drop the puck on the 9:00 game.

This is what playing in the league is all about! For those of you who were there we had four teams in the lobby for the presentation of the jacket which was done by Peter Mitchell. Davey was super excited to receive the jacket.

Thanks to the league for organizing and funding this. It is an excellent example of what we do. When you see Davey at your next game, don't forget to compliment him on his new jacket.

Brash move as New Player takes "A" first night
In a brash move, the newly acquired Alex Kane took over the Assistant Captains role on his first night.  During an interview he claimed that the "A" was already on his jersey and could not be removed.  This story is not flying amongst teamates, many who have been looking for a leadership opportunity on the team for weeks.  In an interview with a disappointed Carter Durant he mentioned how he has been working hard during games and at the bar afterwards to show the coaching staff he is ready for the next step.  Dan Burton, who was slated to start Monday, sat out the game in a silent, but well heard protest.

The coaching staff has some work to do to calm the room down and get the team focused on hockey.  Linemate and top scorer Tom Coukos commented that depending on how this is handled he may or may be looking Kane's way come game time if he is open.

Fans are asking that Kane simply colour-in the "A" on his jersey until he can prove himself.  Sources say he was provided with a red crayon after the game Monday night and given the chance to do the "right thing".  We will see how he handles this controversy when the Hawks play Thursday night, but all indications point towards him keeping the "A".

Trades
After an eventful day at the Twistmark offices, the following trades have occurred as the Saturday Equalization Trade Deadline came and went. As reported by TSN's Darren Dreger:
The Hawks were busy at the equalization deadline, sending proven scoring veteran Chris Stylianou to the Wolves in exchange for the speedy Alex Kane. Also, they swapped forwards with the Kings, with Tom Godward and Jason Waud switching teams.
The Cowboys and Bulls both addressed positional needs by exchanging veteran D-man Douggie Comfort for forward Hooman Arzani.
And finally, the Devils and Mustangs exchanged big forwards, flipping Frank Dizio for Casey Derouder.
The Dawgs stood pat.
